How much do I need? 

  • 15 litres of biochar is enough to try out with 150 litres of compost
  • 30 litres of biochar is enough for 300 litres of compost
  • A bulk bag of biochar is most economical for large projects

The ratio between litres and kilograms for biochar depends on moisture content, as the more moisture in the biochar the heavier it becomes. Our biochar has a moisture content of 20% compliant with the European Biochar Certificate. The ratio is 3.75 kilograms to 1 litre of biochar.

How much CO2 am I saving?

Here are some ways to use your Biochar:

If the organic biochar is used correctly, the humus content and soil fertility increase rapidly. This is reflected in an improved soil structure (the soil becomes looser), increased water absorption and increased water storage capacity. The plants become more resistant to diseases and pests. Plant growth and yields remain stable, especially in years with poor weather.

The fast way. Inside your box is a small pouch. This is a blend of beneficial bacteria and fungi as well as a little bit of seaweed and humic acid. Add the powder to 5L of water and mix. Then soak your Biochar in this liquid for a few minutes. Now you can mix this at a rate of 10% in volume to your potting mix.

Biochar is a battery so you have to charge it before you use it. If you were to add it ‘raw’ then it would steal nutrients from your plants for the first few months and then once it is charged it will start to give it back.

Alternative fast ways. We have had great success soaking the Biochar in a compost tea. To do this all you need to do is take finished compost and mix it with some water. Then add your Biochar to this mix to let the liquid compost soak in. If you are feeling fancy you can add a bit of sugar and oxygenate the compost tea for 12/24 hours before adding the Biochar. This will increase the populations of the beneficial microbes. You can also just use liquid seaweed to soak the Biochar in, or any other diluted organic liquid feed.

2 week method. An easy way to charge your Biochar is to mix it at a rate of 10% to finished compost. Over about a 2 week period the nutrients and microbes will enter into the Biochar.

AddToCompost method. This is probably my favourite. Hopefully you compost your kitchen vegetable waste. If so, you probably dislike emptying your kitchen caddy into your garden compost bin due to the unpleasant smell and liquid. Have no fear Biochar is here! Every time you add waste to your kitchen compost bin, also add some Biochar. This will absorb most of the unpleasant smell as well as absorb the liquid. We have a small tub of Biochar next to our food-waste bin to make this simple.

Hurrah your composting experience has got a lot more pleasant. But wait there’s more… This is called Co-Composting. When you add Biochar into the composting process from the start it dramatically increases the quality of the finished compost. Your compost will reach higher temperatures in shorter times as the microbes find refuge inside the pores of the Biochar causing them to multiply. More microbes mean faster composting! It also absorbs methane emissions making your compost produce less greenhouse gas.
